Drawing With Charcoal: Land and Sea

Drawing with Charcoal: ‘Land and Sea’ explores the fundamentals of creating landscape drawings using charcoal. Build skills, develop your own mark-making language, and learn how to get the most from this incredibly diverse medium.

Drawing with Charcoal: Land & Sea

This workshop covers the fundamentals of using charcoal as a drawing medium, with a specific focus on creating engaging landscapes or seascapes.

Through a series of exercises, you will become familiar with the materials and tools associated with charcoal, leading up to developing your own complex, multilayered drawing of a seascape or landscape.

The itinerary for the day will include:

• An overview of different forms of charcoal, and associated tools

• Experimenting with mark-making to create texture, depth and richness

• Practicing drawing skills, including light, shadow, texture and composition.

• Exploring, refining and blending techniques, adding layers and complexity

• Embark on a sustained multi-layered landscape drawing, employing all you have learned so far!

You'll take away a sketchbook of mark-making exercises and small studies, a series of developmental sketches, and a larger, more complex landscape study in charcoal, plus increased confidence and skills.

Suitable for those new to charcoal, as well as more experienced artists.
